December 1, 2005 - it's
World AIDS Day. Whenever I hear of AIDS, I remember Tom Hanks playing Andy Beckett in the movie
Philadelphia. The said movie really brought me to tears (it actually won numerous
awards ;)). Enough of the movie stuff, here are some key points that I got from a concerned organization,
World AIDS Day :
Five people die of AIDS
every minute.
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This is the virus known to cause
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
You can get HIV in four ways: 1. unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected partner (the most common);
2. sharing needles or other contaminated injection or skin-piercing equipment;
3. blood and blood products through, for example, infected transfusions and organ or tissue transplants;
4. transmission from infected mother to child in the womb or at birth and breastfeeding.
I do believe that awareness is a crucial factor in battling this unrelenting disease. If the good men of science still haven't found the cure for AIDS then it becomes the greater responsibility of those who have the resources to supply the public with accurate and valuable information.
Let's spread the word.. not the disease.
