The Woman Who Survived

from The InsiderShe was known as the 'woman without a face' but after her interview with Oprah, she said that she wanted to be known as the 'woman who survived'. Who are we to contest that?

Carolyn Thomas, 34 years old, was shot by her ex-boyfriend in the face. Her 'before and after' photos were shown in Oprah and from those, you yourself can attest to the tragic transformation of her cara (her eye, cheek, jaw and upper lip were flawed). She was sporty, she got those sexy curves but after some time, because of her ex-bf's extreme jealousy, he asked her to dress up in baggy clothes. It even came to a point when he prohibited her from talking to her 'male' cousins and some immediate family members. Carolyn wasn't allowed to work, and she admitted that she wasn't herself anymore. Her father was not in favor of the guy, he did some background check on the latter and results weren't good. Later in the relationship her mother decided to move in with them; this somehow gave her comforting arms. She considered threats like 'i'll kill you if you leave me' sweet during that time but after four years, at gunpoint, she thought otherwise. Still she continued to live with him, the relationship lasted for eight years. It ended one horrifying night. He came home asking who their male companion was. Carolyn swore there were only three of them in the house, but he didn't believe her. He fumbled for the gun, then shot her mother, the most important person in her life. After that, he turned to Carolyn and shot her in the face. Her mother managed to ask for help from their neighbor, who then called 911. Carolyn realized that she was in a hospital when she woke up. She asked where her mother was... they told her she didn't survive. She got curious and tried to tinker with the bondage on her face, only to find out that half of her face was gone.

Her ex-boyfriend was convicted and was given a life sentence. After the judge delivered the decision, Carolyn was allowed to read a letter to his ex. Despite the pain of losing half of her face and her precious mother, Carolyn said that she had forgiven him.

Truly, Carolyn is a survivor. Instead of doubting her life's purpose, she dauntlessly lives, sharing her lesson to the world. Aside from this, she managed to forgive someone who has done such a devastating thing, it takes enormous courage to do that. Like what Oprah said, each and every woman should learn from her experience. Physical abuse is never a sweet thing. If you think that someone does such an act because he or she loves you, think again. It always boils down to respect. I know that women are more open-eyed about these things nowadays compared to previous decades. I just hope that it won't have to take another carolyn to make a wake up call and bring us to full awareness of this issue.

During the interview it was said that Carolyn will be undergong 5 surgeries. Talking isn't easy for her. She said that she has to relearn her alphabet for others to understand her better. She nourishes herself with the use of a tube which delivers food directly to her stomach. Slowly, she's beginning to eat through her mouth again. Surgeons said that no one can make the original form of her face go back, but at least they can do some things that can make life better for Carolyn.

Bohemian Chic and Jessie Han Pinays

from bohemiancloset.com
from bohemiancloset.comAs we wandered the roads of Tsim Sha Shui, me and my sister realized that we wouldn't be finding any cool pants even if made our feet sore from walking. Stores bargained flamboyant skirts instead. No, not those microminis.. I'm talking about 'below the knee-length' skirts accentuated by lacy designs; to match those skirts were gypsy-inspired blouses and layered tops. Even though the elaborate fashion statement wasn't much of a fad here in the Philippines during that time, my sisters managed to buy some of those bohos. A few days later, I happen to read Cosmo's May-June Wearit issue, they featured the same trend in the said insert. "Bohemian Fashion" that's what it's called.

Now it's starting to conquer the Philippine fashion arena (even gracing SM Makati's theme). Actually, the very first person that came into my mind when I saw this ensemble was jen. I think I saw her in this attire on jep's birthday.. (trendsetter? hahah). True enough, she already bought a bohemian skirt and even told me that there are inexpensive finds in tutuban. Well, I'm not really a skirty person but if you gals are on the look out, better stick to her suggestion. After all, bohemian is never a deviant.

Last last friday me and my batchmates had our 'get together tradition.' While the boys waited outside me and my gal pals had our regular chikas in the washroom.

Jen:(to jowan) ang gorgeous ng lola ko..

Jowan: sabi ng officemate ko 'bakit parang paling ung pony tail mo?' sabi ko naman.. 'gaga style yan'

me: hahah cute nga eh, you look like Jessie Han...

Who is Jessie Han? She is the character played by Song Hye Kyo in GMA's Full House (a cutie koreanovela). Her fashion sense is slowly influencing Pinays' choice of get-up. When I say Jessie's style, I mean heels, colorful layered tops, short girly dresses, one-sided pony tail, and her bolero trademark (like the one in the pic). Quite surprising, I guess Filipinas are really way over Mari Mar when San Cai came into scene; and this is not only visible in their choice of telenovelas, but also in the way they dress up. Yup, they are now open to, not only Western but Eastern fashion as well.

Enjoy these vogue trends... but don't forget to don your best accessory -- SMILE.

doldrums

0 task for today, 0 pending from yesterday, 0 assignment for tomorrow. Here are some suggestions to help you rip out boredom from an eight-hour work day...

7. Ever helped a guzzler? well, here's your chance. "The object of the game is to keep him walking, without falling over, by using your mouse from left to right or right to left - you can't see your mouse which makes it more difficult. Apparently the record is 82 meters!" Good luck!

6. If you've tried number seven and you've gone nuts because the farthest you've been from the starting line is 8 meters, here's a less challenging one ... did i say LESS challenging?

5. Answer the Enstein Quiz and see if you have the makings of a genius.

4. Bring out the da vinci in you... doodle with artistic tools or simply browse artpad's gallery.

3. Still disappointed for not catching you're fave movie? Try reading some scripts as you while away your time.

2. Widen your knowledge.. read some tutorials. This is what i usually do.. haha i saw raised eyebrows there.

1. create a blog... do i need to explain further? ;)

Still bored? try this.

*thanks to my doldrums buddies for all of these ideas...

recepcion a mi mundo

dictionary : "austerity in embellishment"

thesaurus : "modesty, plainness, simpleness, unassumingness, unostentatiousness, unpretentiousness"

wikipedia : "the property, condition, or quality of being simple or un-combined; often connotes beauty"

While all of the definitions above may be valid, sencillez, for me, is the capability to be contented with what you have. It is seeing life sans its intricacies; being thankful for the littlest things.

Waking up by the sound of chirping birds, the bliss brought by your children's embrace, the smile on the face of a sufferer battling cancer, a father's tears upon seeing his firstborn... these are what sencillez is all about.

God is infinitely simple.
