The Tenth Planet

from NASA/JPL-Caltech Yesterday an officemate e-mailed me about the discovery of a 'tenth planet.' The planet, which was given a temporary name of "2003UB313," was said to be larger than Pluto. NASA-Funded scientists Mike Brown (Caltech), Chad Trujillo (Gemini Observatory), and David Rabinowitz (Yale University) discovered the aformentioned planet using the Samuel Oschin telescope. It will be visible with a telescope over the next six months.

Can you recall Irene Mora's story? I believe it was published in several newspapers and if my memory serves me right, I think I saw her interview in a local TV show. Irene Mora is a Filipino-American pilot who was tagged as the 'first Filipina to conquer space.' Many Filipinos took pride in her endeavor most especially when she said that she gave up her American citizenship in order to become a Filipino. Her story didn't end there, the fuss became bigger when denouncing articles surfaced, saying that her story is a hoax. It was said that after conducting an investigation, most of the stuff written about her weren't true.

"...She has not flown on the Space Shuttle in 2000...
...nor is she a Space Adventures' orbital client..."
- pinoyonboard.com

The article about her being the "world's best skydiver" was proven to be veracious, though. Dr. Frank Osanka, president of Friendship Airborne organization validated the story recounting that Mora won a death-defying event over the best skydivers from around the globe.

Well I guess misleading information might have been supplied by either the writer or the interviewee herself. Nevertheless, Mora's accomplishment in her field is something that Filipinos, most especially women, can be proud of.

Here's a neutralized article :).

I found this glimmering site in Blogs of Note. how I am becoming an astronaut is an online journal of a 23-year old Aerothermal Engineer (isnt that cool?). It kinda reminds me of my dream of becoming an astronomer. You'll find cool shuttle pictures and a life account of a young lad trying to, literally, reach for the stars.

irene mora is indeed a hoax. i'd like to say that we shouldn't be proud of her, rather be ashamed of her.
i've seen her at an aiport, heading to manila.
I couldn't bear to see how she treat everyone at the airport as her slaves. she was shouting at the staff and even cursing them for not being able to provide her with all her demands.
she has been poiting fingers at people and saying foul words to people.
she was just lucky coz the staff there were seem to be more educated than her, more decent that she is as they responded in a cool passion way towards her.
although i doubt if anyone knew who she is. she just announced to everyone on top of her lungs that she is a pilot herself, although she look more of an aircraft engine.
well, ms. mora, you reap what you sow!!!
